Wei Wang is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UW-Madison and Director of the Marine Robotics Lab. His research focuses on designing and controlling autonomous robots in complex environments, particularly aquatic systems. He explores unconventional designs and bio-inspired approaches to address key challenges in aquatic locomotion, sensing, control, and collective behavior. Additionally, he is passionate about developing advanced control and perception algorithms that enable robots to autonomously navigate challenging environments and collaborate when necessary. His long-term goal is to enable trustworthy and coordinated autonomy across a broad spectrum of robotics applications, including aquatic monitoring, ocean exploration, underwater construction, urban transportation, and climate change solutions.
Before joining UW-Madison, Wei Wang was a Research Scientist in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his Ph.D. from Peking University in 2016.

Jiayi Jin is a second-year Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. student at UW-Madison. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2024. Jiayi’s interests include soft robotics, robot design, simulation, and control. Besides, Jiayi is also a lover of photographing and hiking.

Shuoqi Wang is a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. student at the UW-Madison. He earned his bachelor’s degree in ME from the UI in 2020, and his master’s degree in Robotics from the UM in 2022. His reaserach interests include soft robots, proprioception and control.

Jack Stonecipher is a third-year Mechanical Engineering PhD student at UW Madison. He received a BA in Physics with a minor in Computer Science from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2023. He is primarily interested in bioinspired robotic design. Outside of the lab, Jack is an avid reader and plays cello in a local symphony orchestra.

Zhiheng Chen

Zhiheng Chen is a Master’s student in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. He is particularly interested in the analytical and data-driven modeling of dynamical systems, as well as their analysis and control based on the resulting models. During his undergraduate career, he worked on the dynamics modeling and numerical simulations of legged and aquatic robots. His current research focuses on robotic fish dynamics and the weak-form sparse identifications for dynamical systems.

Michael Zhao is a senior undergraduate in the Applied Mathematics, Engineering, and Physics (AMEP) program. As a member of the Marine Robotics Lab, he focuses on the dynamic modeling and control of micro autonomous surface vehicles (Micro ASVs). Outside the lab, Michael enjoys photography, playing piano, and traveling.
